Our family farm is in Hebron, in rural, upstate New York nearby Saratoga Springs and Northeast of Albany. We are less than half of a mile from the Vermont border.
Misha has loved horses since before she could talk. Was it nature or nurture? Both. Misha's early years were spent in Amarillo, Texas, home of the Quarter Horse Museum. Her family later moved to Saratoga Springs, home of the oldest sporting venue in the United States- the Saratoga Race Course. In addition, Misha's great uncle was an accomplished horseman, jockey and General Patton's personal horse trainer. It is fair to say that horses are in her blood. Misha was lucky enough to practically grow up at a local Morgan Horse Farm where she still rides. Dan did not grow up with horses but quickly embraced Misha's love for horses and goats and he enjoys working with the animals on the farm. Dan and Misha have two young children who enjoy being with animals and showing in leadline.
When we are not working with our own animals we are often volunteering as a coach/teacher and sometimes as a judge with the local Special Olympics Equestrian team. Equestrian is one of the most fascinating sports during the Special Olympics. Balance, stability and the right communication between the horse and the rider is a key element for success in Equestrian sport. It is amazing to see what horse and rider can do together. Misha is active in the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society- in committee work, showing, attending evaluations and annual meetings, and as the GVHS Massachusetts Equine Affaire Breed Booth Manager. We take our horses to local shows, breed shows, events, clinics, and Equine Affaire- using our horses as ambassadors for the breed. We feel that it is important to get our Gypsy Vanners in front of as many people as possible so they can witness their versatility and good nature. Dan and Misha look forward to the MA Equine Affaire every year. It is a fun few days filled with friends, exhibitors, beautiful horses, and sharing our horses with the public. In 2017, Misha helped to form the New England Gypsy Horse Club (NEGHC) and currently represents the organization as a member of the Board of Directors. Prior to 2017, there were not any shows for our breed in the Northeast. The club was started to promote the breed; to support members; to educate the public about the breed, and to conduct horse shows and other events for exhibition and recognition of the Gypsy Vanner.
In August of 2018 our family went to England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland and were fortunate to be able to visit a few Gypsy breeders. It was amazing to walk through these fields with people who have been breeding these horses for many generations. We were also able to meet our newest equine addition, SD Blueberry Pie in the beautiful fields of SD Farm. We look forward to visiting again.
We are aware of the vast number of horses in need. We have rescued and regularly make donations to several different equine rescues and therapeutic programs. We will make a donation to a 501(c)(3) non-profit equine rescue for every horse that is born on our farm.
